Thanks for following up on my flyer.
I’m a Bristol based motor enthusiast looking to share my know how and skills to save you money on maintaining your BMW. Whilst I am currently offering battery exchange (and programming of course), I can also help you with a number of other services from a serpentine belt replacement to programming features and creating diagnostics reports for your car. Background
I have enjoyed driving BMW motor cars for many years. Over the years I felt that it was bet to have BMW main dealers carry out servicing on my cars, particularly so that I could have my service book stamped and in recent times for the service to be logged in my car’s computer records so that I can assure the new buyer and show that it has been serviced periodically when it comes to selling the car.
Lessons learned and conclusions
Whilst this is certainly the best way to go. Lately I have found out that with a bit of curiosity and interest in finding out how to do some of the work myself, I could save myself quite a bit of money and get the work done in my own time, without being subject to appointments and taking time off work to take the car to the garage.
In the end, I decided that £550 for a major oil service was not exactly a bargain. More importantly, the second class treatment you get when you show up at any main dealer with a car that is over 5 years old is somewhat a bit of an experience as mingling with the garage and other motorist more fortunate yourself is not a great experience, even though they are very good at hiding the fact that they will tolerate you for your money. As opposed to being a member of the BMW owners community. I totally understand that main dealers need to sell new cars and give priority to customers with some kind of warranty and budget free lifestyles but I wish it was not that way.
Anyway. The other reason why I would choose to have main dealers to service my cars is because they know exactly what grade of oils and other components to use for their cars. However, after going round this loop numerous times, you get to learn what’s going on behind the scenes. What LL04 grade oil means and why they have forgotten to stamp your service book, again. Leading you to go back and ask for ‘help’ about something that you have already paid them for.
My experiences have lead me to a desire to be more independent and to ask the question, why can’t I do this myself. Surely changing the oil can’t be that difficult. But wait! That’s not all they do. In fact the most crucial thing about main dealers and specialist garages is that they have some sort of equipment to access your cars’ computer systems and update various service codes such as resetting service intervals, break pad wear indicators and so on.
My investment and proposal to share it with you
I do generally like the BMW brand and cars. They are okay, but fairly expensive to run. Especially because you can’t just pull your battery out and put in a new one. It is necessary to program some code into the car’s computer so that it ‘knows’ a new has been fitted and adjusts the battery charging profiles to ensure that the battery is treated like a new one that is charged as one should be as opposed to an aging battery that may be charged to a lower threshold to ensure that it is not That’s when I upped my game. I have invested in Diagnostics equipment to ensure that the cars’ records reflect the work that has been carried out in the same way that main dealers would.
For example, my oil service was due October 2024. I purchased correct volume and grade of oil, oil filter and a new oil sump copper washer. Carried out an oil change on my drive, spending around half the price main dealer would have charged me, in parts and materials only. I reset the car’s logs accordingly and now the oil service is not due until October 2026. Two years from now. Of course, depending on my mileage I may carry out another oil change service before but at least it is not going to cost me another £550.
